In 2017, Gazprom addressed declining employee engagement in educational activities on its Corporate University platform. I was the main designer for this project as a part of ArtLebedev Studio team. The revamped platform achieved a 3.5× increase in engagement and earned several industry awards for the client.
To understand the drivers behind declining employee engagement and redesign the corporate university platform to deliver a more useful, effective, and engaging experience.
I analysed the existing corporate university portal and identified the main reasons for the decline in employee engagement. Following this, I proposed a new structure and engagement mechanics.
First of all, I assessed the existing website and identified drawbacks, including a distracting UX/UI design, unclear navigation, and an ineffective search function.
Employee engagement was low due to an outdated appearance and an overall lack of visual appeal.
After the research, I had an insight: we needed to clarify the design, emphasize building the career path, adding skills and opening more advanced courses and sharing professional knowledge.
After discussions and presentations, my chosen direction was approved, leading to the development of a new concept.
To address the low engagement, I offered to implement a robust system of motivation. This included visualizing goals, ratings, voting, tips, recommendations, contests, bonuses, and rewards.
The revamped portal introduced new engagement mechanics like progress visualization, motivational blocks, competitive statistics, personalization, and an internal virtual currency.
The updated portal concept ensures that each page adapts to the individual needs of every employee. For example, when an employee shows interest in a specific course, the screen displays their training progress, related article announcements, relevant book recommendations, and valuable tips. Moreover, information about other engaging courses occasionally appears.
What is more, users earn special internal currency for being active, and they can spend this currency buying new courses or some pleasant things.
The design was updated to deliver a user‑friendly experience and a modern visual aesthetic.
The new corporate university's portal drove a 3.5× engagement increase and also won an industry award.
This project won the prize as the best project in the "Digital Transformation" category. The company's corporate university won the Crystal Pyramid HR award in the "Digital Transformation" category, and also entered the top 3 in the "Corporate University of the Year" category.
After the implementation, the engagement increased by 3.5 times.
